Cheering ourselves up with Maples

UBC Maple Forum - Wed, 16/09/2020 - 15:29
Hi everybody, during this difficult time for everybody around the world, it would be really nice for people on this and Maple Society forums to post a Spring photo of one or more of their Maples that are starting to leaf out. I know it would cheer me up. I will attach one of mine. Its Katsura, hope you like it.

Can my Maple survive

UBC Maple Forum - Tue, 15/09/2020 - 22:55
I have a Maple tree which broke about four feet up with the heavy snow in Vancouver about 4/5 years ago. It appeared it had an internal hollow spot weakness. So we cut the tree down to the stump. Then the next year new shoots started to grow. I read somewhere that a new tree wouldn’t grow, well it would grow but would need to be trimmed back to nothing each year because it would not be strong. Well as you can see I let one shoot grow and kept trimming back all other shoots. As you can see...

Help! Is my maple tree dead?

UBC Maple Forum - Tue, 15/09/2020 - 22:51
Hi there. Four years ago (May 2013) I bought two "Autumn Blaze" (Acer x freemanii 'Jeffersred') Maples from a local nursery and had them professionally planted about 30 ft. apart in our suburban back yard. They seemed to take to their new home and get established nicely, and both grew significantly each year. Last fall they were both beautiful and healthy-looking—around 20 ft. tall.

Sadly, this spring, one of them budded and leafed out like normal, and the other didn't...

Pot watering during autumn and winter

UBC Maple Forum - Tue, 15/09/2020 - 13:05
Seems a bit premature given the remarkably hot weather we are having. but what are the rules for watering acers in pots during autumn and winter? Is it water well when the top few inches are dry?

Prompted to post after @Acerholic's comment on the weather thread plus I've been meaning to ask......

Thank you!

Acer palmatum 'Trompenburg'

UBC Maple Forum - Sun, 13/09/2020 - 08:06
Acer palmatum Trompenburg began life as a chance seedling selected by J.R.P. van Hoey -Smith at the Trompenburg Arboretum in the Netherlands and introduced by the Esveld nursery.
Now a very popular and rather unusual cultivar in any maple collection around the world. The lobes radiate laterally and evenly, giving the appearance of fingers extended from a hand. It also has a very ghost cultivar like look at certain times of the year.

Rootstock growth.

UBC Maple Forum - Sat, 12/09/2020 - 10:56
Just thought I'd share this photo with you guys.
This is a 1.5ft red dissectum in a garden opposite me....or at least it was.The little red tree is still there...still 1.5ft,but as you can see the owner let the rootstock get 'slightly'out of control. The poor guy has to keep cutting it back now as it's nearly as big as the house.

List of Accepted Names in the Genus Acer

UBC Maple Forum - Sat, 12/09/2020 - 04:02
I just got the pdf version of the Maple Society Autumn/Fall newsletter, I thought I would post my comment here rather than in the MS members section :

From what I've read, there are now 2 different species instead of 1 species, "Acer palmatum" + 3 different sub-species, or varieties (palmatum palmatum, palmatum amoenum, and palmatum matsumurae)

1/ Acer amoenum (Carriere) Hara (1954)
-- Acer amoenum var. amoenum -
-- Acer amoenum var. matsumurae Koidzumi (1911)
-- Acer...

A.P.Shin deshojo fall colour?

UBC Maple Forum - Wed, 09/09/2020 - 20:17
Hello everyone,I've been meaning to ask this question for years but never got round to it.
Autumn's on it's way,I have the said cultivar and it's got to a decent size now but not once has it given me any fall colour.I had a small Deshojo for a short while and it had good red fall colour straight away.
Has anyone seen any colour from SD or is that the trade off for the longer spring colouration....personally I wish I'd planted Deshojo if this one is never gonna do it.Would love to see someone...

Air layering Acer palm.

UBC Maple Forum - Wed, 09/09/2020 - 15:16
Always nice when an air layer is successful. These little devices have worked with moderate success for me on stems of pencil thickness. This is Sumi-nagashi.

Mikazuki and Amagi Shigure

UBC Maple Forum - Wed, 09/09/2020 - 13:48
What is everyone's thoughts on Mikazuki and Amagi Shigure being planted in the ground? I have a spot in my yards that gets 8hours of late day full sun.

I was thinking of keeping Amagi Shigure in a pot and planting the Mikazuki.

Do people think these are both really beautiful in the garden?

Acer palmatum 'Atropurpureum'

UBC Maple Forum - Wed, 02/09/2020 - 12:34
I would not normally do this, but I wanted to point out the beauty of an old variety. Acer palmatum Atropurpureum, Photo taken on 2nd September 2020.
There are so many questions on the forum about what is the best red maple all Summer. Well IMO this one is up there with the best.
Keep it in full sun and it will never disappoint.

Repotting JM - soil mix? other questions?

UBC Maple Forum - Mon, 31/08/2020 - 06:56
I'm planning to move a few newly purchased Japanese maples from the plastic nursery containers to some large wooden containers that I'm building. I have a few questions that I hoped I could get help with. Apologies in advance if I should have found them by searching but I tried and couldn't.

1 - is there a recommended recipe for a JM soil mix for containers?
2- is early fall an ok time to migrate containers?
3 - any instructions /recommendations on migrating containers? Should I loosen...

JM recommendations for shadier areas

UBC Maple Forum - Mon, 31/08/2020 - 06:39
My house runs east to west on the lot. On each side of the house I have a narrow yard that is a bit shadier than the front and back. The north sides is particularly shady. I'm looking for recommendations of JMs that do well in the shade. It's not completely dark and if I put them on the edges of the front or back yard they can get a reasonable amount of morning or afternoon sun (respectively). I'd be particularly interested in cultivars that have some type of color (not green) in the...

Every Day a Good Day

UBC Maple Forum - Sat, 29/08/2020 - 19:11
Saw a very poetic film today.

Maples can open new interests, I've always admired Japanese culture with all its contradicytions, but I've always been fascinated by their art too, litterature, cinema, animation : Kawabata, Mishima, Misogushi, Kurosawa, Miyazaki...

"Every Day a Good Day"is not only about the tea ceremony, it's about the life of a Japanese woman through about 25 years. It tells a lot about the way the Japanese see the world, the place of women in society too though it's...

recommendation for acer to plant next to orange dream

UBC Maple Forum - Sat, 29/08/2020 - 17:57
I am currently removing some old tired looking plants from my garden and this has opened up some space between an acer orange dream and a fern. The location is in shade in the morning but is sunny from lunch time onwards.
Any recommendations for an acer that would complement the orange dream would be appreciated.
I Have included a picture to show the space but there are still some plants to be removed.

Reverted Orido Nishiki will the variegation return?

UBC Maple Forum - Sat, 29/08/2020 - 01:51
Hi, I grow an Acer palmatum 'Orido Nishiki' in a container. When I bought the tree it had lots of variegation. The following year I fertilized it with a slow release fertilizer and it showed almost no variegation during the growing season. I assume it reverted because I fertilized it. Will the tree be variegated this year or once it reverts it won't ever return?

Acer Palmatum Mikawa Nishiki

UBC Maple Forum - Thu, 27/08/2020 - 08:36
Hi everyone.

Does anyone have any experience with this one? I’m thinking of adding it to my collection but don’t see much information about it. The few pics I have seen look very pretty, but may have been digitally enhanced.

thanks.
