UBC Maple Forum - Wed, 09/06/2021 - 04:57
Hey what are the thoughts on using sea soil compost with a mix of fir mulch and grit for container JM

A survey of Sycamores (A. pseudplatanus), June 1st

UBC Maple Forum - Tue, 08/06/2021 - 22:23
Last week I went around and photographed our Sycamores (A. pseudoplatanus cultivars). It was a sunny day, and I realized that we tend to concentrate on these either earlier in spring, for the pink cultivars, or later in summer for the variegated cultivars with purple leaf undersides (cultivars of var. purpureum).

Given the nice day this seemed a fun opportunity to look at the intermediate stage. I haven't had a good chance to make the post until now, though.

The major cultivars missing...

Will my Sode Nishiki survive this?

UBC Maple Forum - Mon, 07/06/2021 - 21:50
Hi guys,

Bought a Sode Nishiki of about 300 cm last winter. Put it in full sun (sunrise to sunset), I'm in zone 8a. Normally, according to the Vertrees book, it should be able to handle full sun. But it seems to struggle a little bit. I water it daily whenever over 22° C. Planted it by digging out the old soil, adding a lot of improver (also lower pH), has good drainage, ...

Check out the pictures.

I'm wondering what I should do. It's a big tree, it came in a small pot, it probably needs...

Maple bonsai

UBC Maple Forum - Mon, 07/06/2021 - 19:39
I don't think there's a thread "Maple bonsai", but some seem to have an interest in the matter, so...

Acer campestre is a good candidate for bonsai, especially for beginners : it's widely available and can take many errors from a neophyte.

What's more, Acer campestre is one of the few maples that can be reproduced by root cutting. Here is an example of mine, this strain of A. c. is a bit different from most of the field maples we can see here or in Britain, it has less divided...

Maple Spacing

UBC Maple Forum - Sun, 06/06/2021 - 12:46
Good morning, I'm thinking of getting rid of the Dogwood between the Crimson Queen and Koto No Ito to give them some more space, but I'd also like to put another acer in between them, ie a Summer Gold. So my question is would SG, look good between the two and more importantly would it be too close to the others?
Also open to suggestions on another cultivar to fill the space, assuming one would fit. View attachment 212773

Suggestions for an upright growing dwarf Japanese maple

UBC Maple Forum - Sat, 05/06/2021 - 00:25
Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me here.

I am looking for suggestions for a very upright growing dwarf type Japanese maple, something that is going to be taller than it is wide, almost columnar or fastigiate. By dwarf I mean something that is twiggy on old growth with short internodes and small leaves, like most of the "hime" types but more vertically oriented. I am not looking for a witch's broom style maple or something with thick twigs and congested leaves like 'Kotohime' or...

Upright Red Japanese Maple

UBC Maple Forum - Thu, 03/06/2021 - 15:47
Wondering if anyone can offer a recommendation. I’m looking for an upright red Japanese maple. I have a great location in my landscape but I do have size constraints.

The location is east facing and receives morning some and some afternoon sun as well. I am in a suburb of Cleveland, zone 6a. As i said, I am limited in space. Ideally, this maple would be a maximum of 8-12’ tall maple with a fully developed width of around 8-10’.

I am looking for a deeper red color, brick red or more...

Acer amoenum var. nambuanum

UBC Maple Forum - Wed, 02/06/2021 - 23:21
Hi all. I just had a quick look at the accepted names list on the Maple Society website. I am very pleased that Acer palmatum has been split into A. palmatum and A. anoenum as that is clearly a logical division between two easily differentiated species and I believe has been the accepted division used in Japan for quite some time.

(Similarly A. takesimense and A. tenuifolium are recognised as...

Variegated & Maple Tree

I have a maple tree that has branches with both variegated branches on one side and solid leaved branches on the other side.
Any clue how this is happening?

Waterfall JM should I be concerned?

UBC Maple Forum - Wed, 02/06/2021 - 03:53
Just slip potted this weeping waterfall and noticed these cracks on the top of the bark on both sides. Both the trees in my front yard developed that yellow growth on them, but this cracking appearance has me more concerned. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated thanks!

red dissectum

UBC Maple Forum - Tue, 01/06/2021 - 15:05
Hi guys,

I got an acer from my mom a few years ago, back when an acer was just another plant to me... (I know... young and stupid ;-)).

I threw away the tag and I just cant' remember what kind of tree it was. Something in my mind tells me it had "japonicum" on the tag, but I can't see how this one would be a japonicum to be honest.

Can anybody see what type this might be?

It's clearly a dissectum, but I'm thinking about the standard dissectum, maybe an Inaba Shidare, but I find it...

Help with an Arakawa Japanese Maple

UBC Maple Forum - Mon, 31/05/2021 - 23:05
Hi, last year I planted a maple I purchased from a local nursery in full sun and it suffered leaf scorch. I removed all the damaged leaves which resulted in a second flush late in t he season which did not fall in winter, just froze in place. (Zone 5) I was encouraged to see new buds this spring but when they opened they. quickly curled up and died. (A very hot dry spring in Ontario) The trunk is green but no buds now. I have created some shade for the tree, cut back to live tissue and...

acer palmatum root stock prepping for grafting

UBC Maple Forum - Mon, 31/05/2021 - 20:29
We ended up getting 50 AP root stock from our local propagation nursery who we had dealt with for years back in the day so we are going to graft a few specimens in August. I decided to make a short preparation video of "how to prepare the root stock". This is the process we did every year prior to grafting.
I will also post a detailed "how to " grafting video in early August. Of course it is the approach we took and overall our success rate was always very reasonable with a low of 63% and...

Batsford arboretum

UBC Maple Forum - Mon, 31/05/2021 - 14:03
Amazing place, up there with the very best.. totally beautiful and meticulously maintained.
Only downside I didn’t appreciate quite how steep the hillside arboretum is..pushing my dad round in a wheel chair..was like an iron man contest in many parts .

@maf the humongous Shishigashira is superb..I thought I found it initially but the first one I found was only 20 feet tall, then 5mins further on I found the big boy!

Couple of maple questions please.

UBC Maple Forum - Sat, 29/05/2021 - 07:31
Can anyone tell me what kind of maple leaves these are? I'm assuming that they are indeed maples, but I could always be incorrect. Both from the same tree. The only time I can get a photo with sun shining on them is toward the end of the day, other than that they are shaded all day long.

Second question, I believe this is a Vine Maple. It looks as though the top of the tree got broken off several years ago (not shown in the photo here)...

Couple of maple questions please.
