Acer Palmatum Akebono

UBC Maple Forum - Thu, 27/08/2020 - 01:07
Hi everyone.

I am looking at a picture of Acer Palmatum Akebono. It looks very pretty, but not sure how realistic the image is. Does anyone have any experience with this one?

thanks.

Acer palmatum Ukigumo Nishiki

UBC Maple Forum - Wed, 26/08/2020 - 09:18
Hi everyone, does anybody have any experience with Acer palmatum 'Ukigumo Nishiki '
I have Ukigumo and when I saw this advertised in a brocade form, I was very interested.
The trouble is I see no difference in the photos to my Ukigumo.

I have just seen that Ukigumo Nishiki is being re named 'Olivia'. Which is quite strange as there is already an Olivia.

Any thoughts or experience with this one would be greatly appreciated.

Maple leaf tempura in Japan

UBC Maple Forum - Sun, 23/08/2020 - 22:30
I saw this on my Facebook feed, posted by one of our forum members who does not hang out here much these days - maple leaf tempura.
Maple leaf tempura, also known as “momiji,” is a snack native to the Japanese town of Minoh. Battered and deep-fried to a golden crisp, making momiji is a delicate process that takes about a year to prepare. Just ask Setsuko Hisakuni—she’s been making them for over 50 years, carrying on a tradition that began in the 1300s.Click to expand... ...

Acer shirasawanum 'Sonya Marie' - no variegation

UBC Maple Forum - Sun, 23/08/2020 - 19:05
Howdy Friends,

I have a small graft or two of Acer shirasawanum 'Sonya Marie' and I have a question. My plants all look very similar to shirasawanum 'Aureum' and don't show any variegation. Could it be that my original scions were from reverted wood, or does this plant need to be "in the right spot" for the variegation to show up (maybe mine are too shaded or sunned)? Also, could it just be that my grafts are too young and the variegation is masked (like 'Peve multicolor' and...

Your thoughts on this Atropurpureum

UBC Maple Forum - Thu, 20/08/2020 - 23:40
It's a very skinny but tall specimen, over 6ft tall.

I know that for this variety the leaves arent perfect with the green but the red is very bright (the pictures dont do it justice).

Do you think it has a chance to grow much bigger and branch out a lot more or is there no hope?

The seller said the white on the leaves was from calcium in the hard water rather than mildew.

UBC Maple Forum - Thu, 20/08/2020 - 21:08
Trying to determine exactly what this is to understand expected mature height and spread. There are about 20 of these on the property, and the ‘plan’ says Fagus Sylvatica ‘Dawyck Purple which to my limited understanding is a Beech. Also, every year these come down with what I assume is a form of powdery mildew, which is unsightly , but I’m not sure it’s particularly harmful. There is also one of them that is stunted in comparison to the others (the last picture), for which I’m going to get a...

Help My Dying Maples

UBC Maple Forum - Thu, 20/08/2020 - 17:59
Over the last 5 years I have planted 3 different Autumn Flame Maples. The oldest has already died and the next oldest is currently dying in the same fashion. It seems that they start to die about the 3 year mark. It starts with the leaves being much smaller than normal and growing in clusters. The tips of the branches start turning black. Any ideas what is happening to my trees and how to cure them?

Repotting - Pot size

UBC Maple Forum - Tue, 18/08/2020 - 22:46
Hi

If a tree is currently in a pot 30cm (H) x 30cm (W) (18 litres) what increase in size would you go for when repotting?

Thanks!

What is the name of this tree?

UBC Maple Forum - Tue, 18/08/2020 - 08:51
Hi, I’ve been walking past station square in Metrotown, and am wondering what the name is of the tree on the right of the photo. It looks like a Japanese maple. But I am not sure.

Acer campestre ‘Carnival’

UBC Maple Forum - Mon, 17/08/2020 - 09:21
Last year I planted an Acer campestre ‘Carnival’ On the north side of my home where it is protected from prevailing winds and the heat and strongest sunshine. In spite of these precautions, it has scorched badly both last and this summer. It is on drip irrigation and receives adequate moisture. What is going on and what can I do to further protect this lovely small tree? Salmon Arm, BC CDN Zone 5b.

Digging up Japanese maple?

UBC Maple Forum - Sun, 16/08/2020 - 09:58
Hi everyone. I don’t post much just lurk, but

I now have a collection of about 20 Japanese maples, with 7 of them planted in the ground, and the rest in pots.

I however don’t own the land, just the mobile it sits on and was thinking about taking the plunge and buying a house.

Is it possible to dig my Japanese maples up and take them with me? Is there a specific time of year (like winter) or way to do this without harm or is there always a risk?

If it’s going to harm them I’m just going...

What bug could this be!

UBC Maple Forum - Thu, 13/08/2020 - 12:31

I then started looking over the trunk and noticed tiny holes.Something have been eating into my 'Attaryi'.

Acer palmatum 'Yuki Yama'

UBC Maple Forum - Tue, 11/08/2020 - 22:15
Hi, is anyone growing 'Yuki Yama'? Is this an easy to grow variety or finicky? Does it like full sun or shade? Does it like average watering or needs to stay on the drier side? I want to do the right thing for my tree. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Sangokaku

UBC Maple Forum - Mon, 10/08/2020 - 22:48
Got sent to B&Q for paint today by the other half, whilst there I saw this for £5 in the clearance section.
Some of the leaves are damaged which I am hoping is just from the hot weather this week.
I have planted it out in a sunny spot hoping it grows well, time will tell but for £5 why not.

Damage to trunk ?

UBC Maple Forum - Mon, 10/08/2020 - 18:26
Taking a closer look at a dwarf acer I am thinking of moving and have noticed what appears to be damage to the trunk. Is this a major concern or something fairly normal. The tree seems otherwise healthy and has probably been like this a while as it is hidden away behind a pond.
Is there anything I can do to this or just leave it to hopefully repair itself.

Help with ID, please

UBC Maple Forum - Sun, 09/08/2020 - 20:50
Hi all!

I am a gardening newbie, and just rescued a clearance Japanese maple of unknown cultivar. Could anyone please help with identification so I can make sure to plant it where it will be happy? It has been hot and windy and dry lately, so I hope I can keep it healthy moving forward as her leaves seem a bit scorched. Thank you so much, and I look forward to learning much from you all!

Favourites of the Pink/ Red ones in spring throughout the whole year

UBC Maple Forum - Sat, 08/08/2020 - 20:56
Currently I am working on my wishlist of Japanese maples that I would like to translate into action in the next few years. I tried to remove some as the list is much too long for my garden. That`s why I tried to form some groups with cultivars that seem to me a bit similar from some descriptions (I haven`t seen any of these cultivars in person, as there aren`t any nurseries that have them in my region).

Please share your opinions and experiences and (if you have) fotos of yours so that I...

Viable Acer griseum (Paperbark Maple) seeds?

UBC Maple Forum - Sat, 08/08/2020 - 17:35
To start, I know paperbarks are difficult to propogate, that you'll only get a 5 to 10% germination rate from seeds. I've also read that most samaras will be empty if you crack them open hence the difficulty.

So I have a question about the samaras I picked from my tree. I have a very large bag I'd put in the freezer. I thawed them yestereday and this morning cracked open 5 or 6. Had they all been empty or dried up and shrivelled I was going to toss the bag.

Well, none were empty, 4 of them...
