Finally! A real solution for treating bacterial infections.

UBC Maple Forum - Thu, 06/08/2020 - 19:45
Finally we have a real solution that is effective in treating pseudomonas! My wife has developed a horticultural tea that stops an active outbreak and it clears up the vascular system. We have been using this trearment for the past few seasons on several varieties of Japanese maples and have found it works on fungal infections too. Read below for more on the story or check out the pictures as they speak for themselves.

A few seasons ago we had the worst Winter in history. We had several...

Should I move dwarf acer to a sunnier position.

UBC Maple Forum - Thu, 06/08/2020 - 19:45
Hi all, I have a dwarf acer not sure which cultivar it is. I planted it about 8 years ago and it has been fine.
It is however hidden away in a very shady spot where it gets basically no sun at all and as such is not very colourful.
Would it be a good idea to move it to a sunnier spot where it may fare a little better, or would it be best left alone after all this time ?
I assume the rootball would not be that big as it is a very small plant.
If I move it I believe it is best done whilst...

Acer Palmatum

UBC Maple Forum - Tue, 04/08/2020 - 20:43
This tree was recently purchased by myself from a nursery reducing their inventory, because age and health of the owner.

it was apparently dug up about 8 years ago, it was in very heavy clay. Once put in a pot it was never given any love As it was still in the heavy clay. It was given some training but no idea when. It was put under some trees and forgotten about.

UBC Maple Forum - Mon, 03/08/2020 - 23:55
At the International Maple Symposium in 2017 the Maple Society's Acer species working group was formed with the task of compiling a list of names withing the genus for which there is broad agreement.

Chaired by Koen Camelbeke of Wespelaar Arboretum and including UBC's own Douglas Justice as well as other internationally recognized experts, the group has published a preliminary list of agreed names.

Now it's time for your input! We're soliciting opinions and comments from around the world,...

Need help identifying tree (maple?)

UBC Maple Forum - Sun, 02/08/2020 - 08:45
I’ve attached some pictures. Don’t know what else to say about this tree.

Are these girdling roots?

UBC Maple Forum - Sun, 02/08/2020 - 08:34
It's been many years since I checked under the mulch around my Acer p. 'Osakazuki' so I was pretty shocked today to find what looks like girdling roots. Also there's a wound in the trunk a few inches up from the ground. The tree itself looks great so I'd like to just leave well enough alone unless you experts think otherwise.

Thanks for any suggestions you can give me.

Help! Esk Sunset "Maple" is dying off!

UBC Maple Forum - Fri, 31/07/2020 - 22:37
Hello folks - new here and trying to save a tree we love very much. We have several Eskimo Sunset "maples". All are healthy except one - the oldest. About 15 years with us, about 30 feet tall. Difficult to get photos of die-back, therefore. Healthy this year until about June, but in the last 4 /5 weeks, leaves have "dried up" and have fallen. Started at bottom branches, closest to trunk, now about 2/3 of tree is failing...top still vibrant. Last year we lost a 40 foot/15 year old golden...

additional drone footage of Les Souffrettes garden

UBC Maple Forum - Fri, 31/07/2020 - 22:30
The film company sent some additional footage which they had not used in the recent promotional film for the region.

I banged a sound track on it and stuck it into a video on youtube, which I though you might enjoy seeing. It's a couple of minutes.

It's amazing to see this and think that, 28 years ago, there was not a single tree near the house except the large Tilia in front! Everything had been cut for firewood, even in the hedges.

cheers, -E

How to fill out

UBC Maple Forum - Thu, 30/07/2020 - 08:04
I purchased A.p. ‘Milky Way’ back in the early summer. It was a cultivar I had seen only once, but the green on green variegation always piqued my interest. So, I finally found it available from a nursery in Georgia and pulled the trigger on a small one gallon. Actually, probably less than a one gallon. Anyways, it is still alive, and healthy enough I suppose, but it is rather scraggly , and I am hoping you friends can help me decide on what would be the best course of action to encourage...

Acer is growIng full size maple leaves at ends of branches

UBC Maple Forum - Wed, 29/07/2020 - 12:39
Hi

Can anyone help me please? My potted acer, has started to grow different, full sized maple leaves at the end of the branches. They are not growing from the main trunk, but at the end of branches which already have smaller normal acer leaves growing closer to the trunk. The large maple leaves seem to be taking over.

I’ve had the tree for a number of years and it has always done really well, although it is now looking scorched. I have been feeding acer/ericacious feed weekly. The acer...

Acer palmatum dissectum Atropurpureum Group

UBC Maple Forum - Wed, 29/07/2020 - 07:37
I think this is Acer palmatum dissectum Atropurpureum Group, could be corrected on that. I thought this was such a good-looking tree from the side where it's all nice and filled in, and from the side where it's open and you can see the structure. It's on the property of an apartment or co-op building a few blocks from me in Vancouver's West End neighbourhood.

JM that will grow to 5 or 6 metres

UBC Maple Forum - Wed, 29/07/2020 - 07:30
At the end of our garden we currently have a large trampoline for the kids.
When the kids finally grow out of this in 7 or 8 years I would like a largish maple but no bigger than 6 metres.
My idea is to buy something now and grow in a pot until the trampoline is gone. Is this feasible ? Any suggestions on which tree would work and any ideas for some smaller acers alongside it ?

What's the weather like ?...

UBC Maple Forum - Tue, 28/07/2020 - 21:40
What's the weather like where you live ?

Here, and I believe in other places around the world, it's changing fast.

It's been a month since we've had no rain, except 1 or two millimeters twice or three times, not enough to wet the soil below the leaves.

We're heading to another very hot spell for a few days, 30-40 Celsius. Today was 28, a bit cloudy this morning, but sunny and windy in the afternoon, a hot wind, the worst for maples. Went swimming in the pool across the street, we were the...

Cotyledons on seedling

UBC Maple Forum - Tue, 28/07/2020 - 21:18

I moved a seedling into it's own pot and i'm a bit worried as they have started to die after one day.

Help identifying issue on JM trunk

UBC Maple Forum - Tue, 28/07/2020 - 17:04
Hey all,

Looking for help treating a trunk turning black on a recently acquired Sango Kaku. This is the second Sango that developed the issue under my care this season.
Some background, the tree dried up a bit a few weeks ago after purchasing. I have since slip potted it into a better mixture and moved it into the shade. Located in zone 6a.

Can anyone identify this?

UBC Maple Forum - Tue, 28/07/2020 - 07:04
I have a 35 ft Burgundy Acer in my front garden that is beautiful and in the last year or two I’ve noticed this horrible looking fungus lurking around the roots and it seemingly damaging the tree.
The tree Also has a horrible fungus growing on the bark and the leaves are wilting and looking very damaged? Can anyone identify the fungus and let me know how I can remove it if doing any damage?

Ideas for new maples in my garden

UBC Maple Forum - Mon, 27/07/2020 - 17:43
@ROEBUK as I said I want to show you and everyone else the view from the terrace as the maples in this part of the garden will more often be looked at from afar. So maybe Spring Delight is not a good choice at all (being green surrounded by green lawn).

It is important for me that all my future maples can play their strengh as solitaires but that they also harmonise to each other concerning colours, habit and leaf structure. My problem is that I do not have the...
