Help caring for Acer Japonicum Aconitifolium

UBC Maple Forum - Thu, 16/07/2020 - 06:58
Hi there, I am new to maples and am seeking help for one of my trees that has been doing great until recently. I purchased this tree who I have tagged my “rescue tree” Because it screamed at me to take it home from the nursery and I found it to be truly stunning. See details of its coming home.

MAY 2020: The Acer Japonicum came very pot bound, dry and some leaves had died but it had all that when I brought it home, it was still providing new growth and is gorgeous. I believe it is...

Bad Graft on Mikawa Yatsubusa?

UBC Maple Forum - Wed, 15/07/2020 - 16:34
Hi! I'm new to maples and this forum. Looking for some answers. Recently got my second maple from an online nursery, as there are little other options available in my area (Austria, Europe).

1. Is this graft bad? It looks uneven and bulging. Is there a way to fix it?

2. How old would you estimate this Mikawa?

3. Do you think approx. 8 hours offull sun from 06:30-15:00 in Zone 7 (Austria) would be too much? If so, would a roof with 50% shade cloth, reducing full sun exposure to...

JM Seedlings Leaf issues

UBC Maple Forum - Tue, 14/07/2020 - 18:16
Hi all,

I have been growing around 200 seedlings for future grafting. Some of my seedlings have big chunks of their leaves missing. I wanted to know if the culprit is a creature or the way I have treated them. Perhaps excessive leaf scorch from watering during the day?

The seedlings have been kept in a shady spot behind my greenhouse getting a few hours sun each day.

Any ideas?

Thanks

HELP! What to do with my Maple tree??

UBC Maple Forum - Tue, 14/07/2020 - 16:23
Greetings! Always search this site for useful info, but this is my first time posting a question.

My Red Rocket Maple (Acer rubrum) has been in the ground for 7 years as has done wonderfully even though I know our Zone here in Edmonton, AB is not ideal. However this year (for the first time), it was grossly delayed in leafing out in the spring and what looked like the original buds that were prepped to go, died and finally in the 2nd and 3rd week of June, new leaves emerged leaving the...

Globe and Mail article: Mistaken identi-tree

UBC Maple Forum - Tue, 14/07/2020 - 05:56
The Norway maple, an aggressive and suffocating invader, is too often confused with North America's sugar maple. Whether on cereal boxes or our banknotes, it's clear we need to better recognize and celebrate our country's native species.Click to expand... The Globe and Mail: The Norway maple is a bully, and shouldn’t be confused with the sugar maple tree...

White on leaves & scorching

UBC Maple Forum - Mon, 13/07/2020 - 17:02
Any ideas what the cause of the white on the leaves in the first pic is?

Also, i've noticed more leaves turning brown as per the second photo.

Any advice please?

A very slow going delicate Matsumurae with deeply dissected leaves..had this one 3 years now, it has grown 50% wider but has hardly grown any taller..which is commensurate to Vertrees description: it does not grow much more than 10feet but tends to grow as wide as it does tall. Can’t find an Autumn photo at the moment

Maple disease

UBC Maple Forum - Sun, 12/07/2020 - 21:40
Hello.

I wonder if anyone can tell me what is troubling my maple tree. It grew well last year but this spring, and now it has problems. A couple of months ago the leaves started turning light green and I believed this to be Chlorosis. Now the tree produces lots of tiny leaves coming from the trunk and small branches but they never develop. It looks like the branches never develop but tiny leaves do and they just keep coming and then dying. I don't know what variety of maple it is. The...

Near Gyro Park - Victoria BC

UBC Maple Forum - Sun, 12/07/2020 - 04:06
Hi there. I am wondering what exactly these trees are. I saw a row of these trees planted outside townhouses near Gyro Park in Victoria. Plant ID tells me Gumbo-Limbo. A search of Gumbo-Limbo tells me they survive only until -1 and are tropical. They are a coastal tree, which would make sense for their location. One photo I just found on google street view, same location, unsure of the date.
Hope someone has a sure answer for me, would love to see some more outdoors, are there any in...

Japanese mountain maple - seeking thoughts!

UBC Maple Forum - Sun, 12/07/2020 - 03:43
Hi all, new to this forum - I'm Claire :)

Posted this on a bonsai forum already, but haven't had much response and thought this would be a good place to ask!

I'm curious about the leaf colour - it's this the tree's leaves turning towards red autumn leaves?

I live in England, UK by the way

Thanks very much!

Bloodgood or not

UBC Maple Forum - Sat, 11/07/2020 - 17:23
I was at a local nursery and they had a few small grafts labeled A P bloodgood. So I purchased two of them because the leaves looked different then the two older bloodgoods that I have. My trees that I have are prob 10-15 years old.
I just wanna make sure mine are bloodgoods.
Thanks in advance!

Fertilising JM

UBC Maple Forum - Tue, 07/07/2020 - 20:54
I just started fertilising my trees tonight with this stuff. I have mixed the slow release pellets with 1 ltr of sharp sand/grit and dosed the mix into 4 or 5 vertical holes around the tree about 8” deep into the soil and 8” away from the trunk using a spatular that is concave so it makes a nice hole..
The pack says dose at 50-100grams per dug hole The pots dosed so far range from 30ltr to 100ltr..so the smaller pots will have got 20g and the larger 30g.

Is this reasonable, comments welcome.

Is it A. palmatum 'Atropurpureum' and what about pruning?

UBC Maple Forum - Tue, 07/07/2020 - 10:53
I need your help to identify this attached maple. This I ordered from a nursery and on invoice
it’s identified as acer palmatum Atropurpureum. Grafting is visible 2inch. above ground level.
The nursery sent it after I described that I need a max 2.5m height and wide tree.
I hope it will fit.

On the other hand I think that with later pruning I will able to form the shape.
This tree was probably stored at very tight place, because it has only 3 branches, and even if 60 inches height, the...

Our favourite potted JMaple is "Green River"

UBC Maple Forum - Sat, 04/07/2020 - 18:10
This is its second year in our garden in a container. It is in full sun and it always looks pristine. I see very little about this particular variety. Who else has GR?

Maples Reference Books

UBC Maple Forum - Fri, 03/07/2020 - 13:11
One of the things I'd like to add to the Maple Society web site (as a suggestion by one of the posters here) is a list of reference books. If anyone would like to devote some time to adding a few books to the list, it'd be much appreciated.
