Root pruning made easy?

UBC Maple Forum - Tue, 11/05/2021 - 07:22
Hi everyone, I have a few JM’s to repot and will need to root prune over the years. Wondering if it’s a good idea to use a plastic or metal pot liner (nursery pot) or what I’ve recently seen a “grow bag” to line a decorative pot so that it may be easier to remove the tree from the pot and root prune? Some of my JM have clay decorative pots and the trees stand roughly 5-6’ so pruning can be heavy work considering I’m only 5’2”. Does anyone have any thoughts or experience with the “grow bags”?

Keeping acer small in pot

UBC Maple Forum - Mon, 10/05/2021 - 16:20
Hi!

I'm dreaming of growing an acer (or two) on my balcony. The balcony is northfacing and shady. I'd like a cultivar with fresh green leaves for that zen forest atmosphere, that has a beautiful upright form, and gets up to 2-2.5m in height (similar width is fine).

After much research, the cultivars I'd most like to try are Seiryu, Koto No Ito, and Kamagata, in that order. Seiryu is almost my dream cultivar, but I worry it will get too big (Baumschule Nielsen says 4-5m for "very old"...

This was sent to me as an Acer palmatum Elmwood. Obviously it’s not an Elmwood, but it is interesting and I’d love to know what it is. Does anyone recognise the look of it?

The oranges and rusty colours are much much vivid I really life.

Thanks to anyone who can take the time to have a look at this for me.

Regards

Luke

Help caring for Acer Japonicum Aconitifolium

UBC Maple Forum - Sat, 08/05/2021 - 07:42
Hi there, I am new to maples and am seeking help for one of my trees that has been doing great until recently. I purchased this tree who I have tagged my “rescue tree” Because it screamed at me to take it home from the nursery and I found it to be truly stunning. See details of its coming home.
****
MAY 2020: The Acer Japonicum came very pot bound, dry and some leaves had died but it had all that when I brought it home, it was still providing new growth and is gorgeous. I believe it is...

Maples Reference Books

UBC Maple Forum - Fri, 07/05/2021 - 11:52
One of the things I'd like to add to the Maple Society web site (as a suggestion by one of the posters here) is a list of reference books. If anyone would like to devote some time to adding a few books to the list, it'd be much appreciated.

Acer Palmatum ?

UBC Maple Forum - Thu, 06/05/2021 - 18:50
Dear,
a couple of years ago, i have bought this Acer.

However, it's not clear which variety it is.

I was thinking "Acer palmatum Sangokaku" but this picture is taken yesterday and as far as i remember it always has this red bark.

Also, some of the bark is white. Infection?

Kr,
Lieven

"Cuckoo" maples

UBC Maple Forum - Thu, 06/05/2021 - 18:41
We all know that when we plant seeds, it can take two years before they germinate.

I found these in pots where I planted seedlings last year, or even 2 years ago. They were probably from a batch of mixed seeds, and when the wings of the samaras are gone, somme seeds are very small and can look like grains of sand. And it's hard to keep a record of everything you plant.

The first one a sort of red dissectum, the second one (and the third one) at the foot of what I think is Acer...

Acer Palmatum "Pixie"

UBC Maple Forum - Wed, 05/05/2021 - 18:32
Hi,

bought this eight years old containered tree from a renowned garden centre two years ago, potted it well with entirely new soil, with drainage, no fertiliser, kept on a 2nd floor outdoor terrace facing south west, kept outdoors over winter like all my other acers, watered in winter every two weeks, in spring every week.

Was leafing very nicely, like in the last two years, but now within three days, leaves limp, others shrivel. There was a three day storm, still on-going, but the...

Maples late to leaf out

UBC Maple Forum - Wed, 05/05/2021 - 11:00
After discussions on another thread this morning about maples that are particularly late to leaf out this year. I thought I would start a thread on this and post the 8 of mine that are 'very' tardy.
Two more night frosts to come tonight and tomorrow and then hopefully they will get a move on.
They are Vics pink, Okushimo, Kamagata, Beni Hagoromo, Coral magic, Shirazz, Lionheart and Baldsmith.

Maples late to leaf out

koto-no-ito

UBC Maple Forum - Wed, 05/05/2021 - 06:01
I bought a beautiful Kotonoito maple last spring, it was very full and healthy looking, but one year later it is only leafting out on the bottom 1/4 of the tree? It was in the ground at the nursery and I put it in a large pot on my balcony, I have 3 other acers on my balcony, 2 are 10 years old. A landscaper suggested my kotonoito had a disease when I bought it? Any other ideas? I spent more than I have ever spent on a tree.

Orange dead branch

UBC Maple Forum - Wed, 05/05/2021 - 05:52
Help!?!
An older branch on this variegated JM is orange and dead. Orange looks alarming. I plant to cut off where wood looks healthier....but does anyone have a diagnosis? Is tree doomed?

'Dud buds'

UBC Maple Forum - Tue, 04/05/2021 - 18:59
Hi, JM lovers!

Wondering whether there is some way to encourage trees with branches that bud and then don't leaf out.

I live in western Massachusetts and the last five years have been tough on my maples, what with climate volatility.

Mislabelled Elmwood

UBC Maple Forum - Tue, 04/05/2021 - 15:46
Hi all. I was hoping for a little help.. again lol.

I have a tree I purchased that was labelled Elmwood. Having sold my previous one to Mark @ROEBUK i snapped it up. This was 6 weeks ago approx. No leaves, hard to tell what you’re buying etc. I have been patiently waiting for it to leaf out because I knew to expect soft, delicate and beautifully coloured and reticulated leaves.

Over the last week or so it began to show some sign of life... however, I believe we have an...

Hi. It's huge, about 70' tall.
Whatever it is, I think I'm allergic to it.
