Blotchy leaves

UBC Maple Forum - Tue, 30/06/2020 - 19:25
Hi, This year I have noticed blotchy leaves on two Katsura trees in containers. One is 5ft and the other is just a baby less than a foot tall. It is reminiscent of a viral disease but I'm not a maple expert yet and would be grateful for comments. Is it short of a nutrient perhaps? I would not have though so as I just bought the small one and potted it up.

Autumn Blaze Maple 20 years old

UBC Maple Forum - Tue, 30/06/2020 - 18:49
Good Morning. I wanted to see if I could get some advice regarding my 20 year old Autumn Blaze Maple. This spring it budded out and also had a large number of whirlybirds. It appeared that as the whirlybirds were dropping from the tree that the new leaves were not plentiful or opening up and growing very fast. As time has went on those most of those leaves have dried up and are now falling off. There are some areas, misting the top that have leaves continue to bud and grow. We have a...

Japanese maple with grass-like leaves

UBC Maple Forum - Tue, 30/06/2020 - 06:53
I have seen a maple with skinny leaves, but these leaves are more like grass. I've assumed it's Acer palmatum, but that might not even be right. It's outside the Parks Board Office at the edge of Stanley Park.

Trunk problem on maple tree

I noticed loose bark on my maple tree, this is what it looks like underneath! Any idea of what’s going on and how to treat it?

Maple identification

UBC Maple Forum - Mon, 29/06/2020 - 13:33
I came across this one in a local nursery in the sale section this morning. An 8ft tall with no tag hence 'in sale section'. Still £100 though. It is a pretty Matsumurae group maple with some very delicate colours.
I've looked through my books and cannot ID it, any ideas ??

What acers would give a similar look to this?

Need advice for red Japanese maple

UBC Maple Forum - Sat, 27/06/2020 - 18:04
I planted this red Japanese maple last Spring. It is only about 3 feet tall. It has not leafed out this year. It does have growth at the trunk of tree only. Are these considered suckers? Do I need to trim these off? I water regularly and I’m in South Alabama so everything has been in bloom for months now.

What is the proper name for this red color?

UBC Maple Forum - Sat, 27/06/2020 - 12:29
This second year seedling is holding its very dark red color quite well into the summer. I am interested to know what is the right name for this type of “red” for maples. It almost has a bluish iridescence, especially in bright daylight.

Bloodgood vs Fireglow

UBC Maple Forum - Sat, 27/06/2020 - 12:26
If you had to choose one which would you choose between the two?

For Bloodgood over Fireglow:

- Tolerant of full sunlight
- Slimmer but taller profile

For Fireglow over Bloodgood:

- Stunning in sunlight and less dull without sunlight
- Better autumn colours
- Wider and shorter profile
- Smaller more dainty leaves

I think I lean towards Fireglow although specimens I have seen in nurseries have always had more crispy leaves and that's even under a canopy! That makes me think that they are...

Shirasawanum : Two brothers

UBC Maple Forum - Thu, 25/06/2020 - 21:03
From the 12 seeds or so I picked from my Acer shirasawanum 'Atumn Moon', 3 germinated. A small hefty one, a long legged one, and one that I gave to my niece because it was too similar to the plain species - and I need more space :-)

One has much smaller leaves than the type, it's in 50% full sun, the "little one" has large leaves, and although in the shade 70% of the day, displays colurs that are more red than the one in full sun. In full daylight, the red spot at the base of the leaf/top...

Repot now or wait

UBC Maple Forum - Thu, 25/06/2020 - 14:50
There's a fair chance this has already been answered elsewhere on here, so feel free to redirect me to another thread, but I was wondering about repotting my maples in the next week or so. Is this a bad time? Most of them are in a poor-draining media so I'll essentially be bare rooting them and doing any root surgery that's necessary. Temps here are 30-40s of the day and 20s at night. Would it make more sense to wait till closer to spring?

Thanks,
Kyle

Looking for your experiences of keeping any of the above 3.......

Thank you!!

Which coral bark would you choose?

UBC Maple Forum - Wed, 24/06/2020 - 21:27
Hi all and good evening.

I keep coming across a couple of trees that I don’t have and just wondered whether it was worth owning them. I already have Sango kaku, and love it. The autumn colours last year were truly stunning and the leaves stayed on the tree much longer than anything else. I also have Bihoo and Shidiva gold. Is it worth having any of the others? The ones that seem readily available are Beni kawa, Eddisbury, Japanese sunrise and Winter flame.

Does anyone have any experience...

Which coral bark would you choose?

Advice please

UBC Maple Forum - Wed, 24/06/2020 - 11:03
Would anyone kindly give me advice on buying a red acer. I am looking a plant that displays bright red or redder colour (but not dark red) in summer with less chances turning green in full afternoon sun.

I come across these acers – Pixie, Skeeters Broom and Shaina while searching on internet, I would like to know which one has the best bright red colour of the three and meets the above requirements.

Thank you.

Does this seem to be reverting to you?

UBC Maple Forum - Tue, 23/06/2020 - 13:15
The tree is supposed to be an acer palmatum 'phoenix' as shown in the 1st pic.

The new leaves in the 2nd pic seem to be reverting to the root stock....do you agree? If so, it looks like a nice revert! What species do you think the revert/root stock is?

Bloodgood: Scorch or Verticillium?

UBC Maple Forum - Sun, 21/06/2020 - 04:34
In early March of this year, I bought a Japanese Red Maple Bloodgood and planted it in our small garden. It was growing nicely for several months from having no leaves to being full of beautiful red leaves. Then a little over a month ago when the weather started to get warmer, the leaves started to burn from the outer edge inwards.

Now I thought it was just scorch and the tree needed more water. The calla lillies and other flowers around the tree are growing just fine and flowering...

Are these brown tips due to underwatering?

UBC Maple Forum - Sat, 20/06/2020 - 15:19
It's in such a shaded place that I cant imagine it's due to the sun.

So i'm thinking underwatering although the soil is still moist - moister than when I'd usually water my other acers.

Acer Mystic Jewel

UBC Maple Forum - Sat, 20/06/2020 - 13:33
I've just received my new Acer palmatum 'Mystic Jewel'. At this moment in time it is not exactly a jewel, but it has wonderful shaped leaves that are going to look great when they mature.

Time will tell!!!!!!

What soil mix to use for potted acers?

UBC Maple Forum - Sat, 20/06/2020 - 13:26
And do you test the pH of the soil before potting?

Thanks!
