Acer palmatum "pixie" , spring trim

UBC Maple Forum - Mon, 03/05/2021 - 20:43
Just pruned our acer palmatum "pixie" this morning and created another maple video for my channel. The Pixie is essentially a dwarf version of the much larger Bloodgood.

This particular tree was one of my first grafts when we started our nursery. Always held onto this one as we were curios just how tall it might get!

After 25 years it sits just over 4 ' in height ( 1.3 metre)

Which is which?

UBC Maple Forum - Sun, 02/05/2021 - 17:29
I thought I’d create this thread to see if I can get some clarity on the identity of these 2 cultivars. Both sold to me as Peaches and Cream. One from a random seller on eBay, and another from Guy Maillot.

To me they are two different to be the same cultivar, no matter what amount of sunlight, soil type, fertiliser, drainage etc etc..

My instinct is telling me that the small one is the true Peaches and Cream. So what does that leave me with. ‘Como’ perhaps?

Please do get involved and let...

Re-potting a mature japanese maple

UBC Maple Forum - Sun, 02/05/2021 - 17:24
Several of our trees on our property have been in containers for over 40 years now ( since initial graft )

Although the tree pot does need to be increased there does come a point when a final resting container is enough.

A 22" to 24" diameter top with a depth of 18" - 22" is more then enough.

An example would be our oldest seiryu. We did aquire this specimen when we started our nursery operation in 1993. It was already approx 15 years old then. We took over an existing small...

Do I need to straighten this Japanese maple?

UBC Maple Forum - Sun, 02/05/2021 - 03:59
I bought this small Japanese maple today that’s growing to one side a bit. Is this okay and will it straighten on its own, or is it better if I straighten it with a stake?

Advice is appreciated!

Acer Palmatum Sango Kaku dying...

UBC Maple Forum - Sun, 02/05/2021 - 03:25
Hello everyone,

I bought a coral bark maple about two years ago, but after this past winter, my tree doesn't look so good. I have searched online and I don't know what's wrong. I really love this tree and would really appreciate it if anyone can help me ID the cause of its decline.

Last summer it was infested with cankerworms but I sprayed it with biological bacteria insecticides following the instructions and the infestation was solved. Then during winter, I did some minor pruning....

2019 seedlings

UBC Maple Forum - Sat, 01/05/2021 - 13:49
The two on the left are from the 2018 MS seeds exchange, I put those that didn't germinate in a pot in 2019 and I got these. The others were collected from various trees in a local arboretum but I couldn't label them, and anyway they don't look like the ones I saw there as far as I can remember :

Japanese maples, what and where to plant / how to prune

UBC Maple Forum - Fri, 30/04/2021 - 20:37
Hi everyone
Just signed up again today. We were on the forum years ago when we operated "rise and shine japanese maples" in chilliwack BC. For many years we sold our grafted container grown specimens at Granville island, east van farmers market and the van dussen garden show. We retired in 2008 from the nursery trade. We still garden and enjoy all of our "mother" trees. Most of these specimens were used to take cuttings for all the varieties me sold over 20 years.

I continued to pursue...

Maple leaf issue after aphids

UBC Maple Forum - Thu, 29/04/2021 - 21:44
Hi all, new to the forums.
I have searched for 'aphids' and 'black spots' but nothing quite answered my question so here goes...

I have a few potted maples along with 2 smaller bonsai.
Last week I noticed quite a few had the dreaded aphids showing under the leaves, and my 2 orange dream's were particularly affected.
Never had them quite this bad before and a short blast of regular insectiside has always been more than enough.
This time around, the aphids have been quickly dispatched, but a...

List of U.K specialist nurseries and grafters, including none mail order.

UBC Maple Forum - Thu, 29/04/2021 - 16:57
With the difficulty in now importing, it would be good for anyone in the U.K to share resources and maybe highlight anywhere where they find anything unusual.

I use Bartehlemys who do all their own grafting and supply specimen plants as well as one year grafts and anything in between.

I also found Purple Ghost at Garsons near Titchfield yesterday.

Maple shopping list 2021

UBC Maple Forum - Thu, 29/04/2021 - 08:07
Now the festivities are nearing the end for 2020 and our thoughts start to look towards another season of maples, I thought what about a thread for us maple enthusiasts to post what ones we hope to obtain next year.
Now for me it is now a case of, if I want one then one has to be removed from my garden to make space. Fortunately I have a daughter and son in law who are really getting the bug, so are grateful recipients.
Now to get things going, here are my two that I have at the top of my...

Can my Bloodgood survive this drastic prune?

UBC Maple Forum - Wed, 28/04/2021 - 19:37
Recently got 5 gallon Bloodgood for a price that was too cheap to pass up from a big garden center. However -- and this is a more of a personal pet peeve -- they didn't train a main branch, and let it split into two right above the graft. I strongly dislike multi-trunked Bloodgoods, but this was my only option.

My questions are:

1) If I cut off the smaller side branch, can the tree survive? It will lose about 40% of its canopy, which I know is quite drastic.

2) I know the advice is...

Grown up seedlings

UBC Maple Forum - Wed, 28/04/2021 - 17:21
With all the near identical new introductions I often look to seedlings for something different and they can make impressive plants to compare to any named cultivar.
I have a few which are yet to leaf, but here’s a selection, photos taken today.
The last maple had to have the “last ditch chop” something I’ve often had to do when there is rapid dieback and have a few nice plants that have come back successfully.

Brexit costs with importing from Europe to the U.K

UBC Maple Forum - Wed, 28/04/2021 - 17:12
I’ve just been notified by Esvelds that they now add a 150 euro charge to any U.K order for the plant passport cost and the parcel post cost is inflated also to cover new admin costs associated with Brexit.
Has anyone else in the U.K had this and with any other European nursery?

I do understand that this is not down to the nursery and we have consequences we have to accept from Brexit, but this is a big surcharge and many cultivars available within Europe cannot be sourced here.

Liquid fertiliser

Has any ever used this before? I know not to use it before the risk of late frosts are over.

Terminal?

UBC Maple Forum - Wed, 28/04/2021 - 15:32
Spotted this on a tree I bought a few weeks ago..under stock looks like it’s dying..looks terminal to me! Think I might march it back to where it came from..shame I don’t see Kamagata often..

Cheering ourselves up with Maples

UBC Maple Forum - Tue, 27/04/2021 - 17:05
Hi everybody, during this difficult time for everybody around the world, it would be really nice for people on this and Maple Society forums to post a Spring photo of one or more of their Maples that are starting to leaf out. I know it would cheer me up. I will attach one of mine. Its Katsura, hope you like it.

Maple cultivar by another name OR (Synonym).#27

UBC Maple Forum - Mon, 26/04/2021 - 16:51
I wanted to see what the interest is on the Maples forum with regards to a thread that we can turn to, to see if a Maple cultivar we have seen and liked to add to our collection already exists but in a different name. Now I know the Maple Society has carried out some work on this and the updated Species list, but I felt as this forum is getting a very large amount of interest, then this thread might be of use.
It could also save you a lot of money !! Which is never a bad thing.
So I will...

Mislabelled Acer Hime Shojo

UBC Maple Forum - Mon, 26/04/2021 - 15:22
Yesterday I managed a short and very cautious trip out to a nearby garden centre. I went to go a look for a new Rhododendron but as always was drawn to the Acer section. I saw this and as It was only £14.99 I couldn’t resist. It was labelled as Hime Shojo but looks much more like a reticulated variety to me. Different from anything I already have.

Does it look familiar to anyone?

Thanks
