Japanese Red Dragon transpant

1 hour 8 min ago
Hi all, new member getting used to navigating this forum. Hope this works. Previous owner of mature Red Dragon Japanese Laceleaf Maple had to remove the tree quickly due to demolition. No rootball prep and I got it with bare roots last Aug.
Used root growth with some sand at bottom. Trickle fed it for couple weeks. This spring produced some underdeveloped leaves on some branches. Thought all was good. This week all the leaves are curled, withered and dried.the pix showed it at its beauty...

What has happened to my red maple tree?

Mon, 21/06/2021 - 16:48
My Red Maple tree is 40ish years old. There hasn't been a problem with my tree until.... A few days ago we had a hard rain storm come through the area, then we noticed the top part of my tree. The leaves have dried up, curled up and falling off, the affect is going down the tree. Its not like this is the first rain storm, or even the first hail storm to hit the area. I will try to post a picture. Thanks for any help I can get. Donna

Orange dream health

Sun, 20/06/2021 - 18:58
Good afternoon everyone,

My name is Philippe and since a few years I started doing bonsai. While doing bonsai I fell in love with Japanese Maples. I've went to a few nurseries and started collecting them. So far they are growing well except one variety where Im having problems with.

I have 2 orange dreams which I left sitting in the full sun. They did not like that at all and have burned leaves. I moved them to a shady place about 10 days ago where they only have direct sunlight in the...

Saved ?... Nolite spem amittere

Sun, 20/06/2021 - 18:32
I have a few that suffered from the heat, then the frost, and again from the heat and then pouring rain.

Among those I keep in small pots, I thought I had lost a little princess, one of my 'Mapi no machi hime'.

I put it in a place with the sun from 11 to 14. It seems it wants to live again :

I'll have to trim, or prune it, and repot it, but it's alive.

EDIT : Sorry, just went out to make sure my neighbour doesn't pound the youngsters that...

Coral Bark not looking so great

Fri, 18/06/2021 - 18:59
Hello!

This is my first post after lurking on this board for a couple weeks.

I have a coral bark maple that’s been planted in the same spot since April of this year. After we received a lot of rain for a couple weeks, I noticed it wasn’t looking very happy. Leaves started to droop. Started noticing the tips of branches turning black..

Our ground has a substantial amount of clay in it but this initial hole that was dug was amended with just regular ground soil from the store so I figured...

Is this a Summer Gold?

Fri, 18/06/2021 - 11:20
Hi there! I bought this Summer Gold recently and wonder if it has been mislabeled. The leaves look wrinkly and misshapen on the top growth. I thought it looks more like Anne Irene though the bottom leaves do look like summer gold to me. Wish someone could help to identify. Cheers!

Acer Palmatum Mila

Thu, 17/06/2021 - 09:57
Good morning, I couldn't find a thread for this one so thought I'd start one, if I've missed it please feel free to combine them together.
This is a fairly new one apparently, from Dick van der Maat in Holland that I received this morning, described by Mr Maple as a rockstar on their website, I quote "'Mila' leafs out in the spring as a bright pastel pink to red on leaves with an orange eye to the leaf. During the summer this cultivar shines with summer flushes of bright reds to deep...

What sort of maple is this?

Wed, 16/06/2021 - 18:58
Hi All,

I bought an unlabeled maple. It was amongst a lot of Japanese maples and the nursery was supposed to have Acer pseudosieboldianum takesimense in stock and that's what I was hoping it was because I garden in zone 5, so A. p. takesimense would likely be reliably hardy. However, when I got it home and compared it to online images of A. p. takesimense, it didn't seem to be a good match. Then again, that maple seems to be highly variable. I've posted a few pictures of it. The black...

Is this a Sango kaku?

Wed, 16/06/2021 - 18:48
Hi.

Got my first JM about a couple of months ago and am in love with it. Hoping you can help me identify it.

The leaves are really small - most are around 1 to 1.5 inches (approx). And unlike the other coral barks I've seen, have turned from a yellow/red to full red despite the fact that we've headed from spring to summer. Had a 5 day stretch of 90 degree days here (Boston suburb).

What variety of Japanese maple is this

Wed, 16/06/2021 - 18:47
Hi All,

hopefully someone can help me out. I live and garden in Orillia ON, Zone 5, but I bought the maple in question in the suburbs of Vancouver. I was looking for Shirasawanums because they seem hardy enough here. The maple in question was labeled as a Shirasawanum and the variety was given as well. My recollection is that the variety name began with an M or N, but I could be wrong about that. Anyway, this maple is totally unlike any other Shirasawanums that I've been able to find...

Training Hana Matoi

Wed, 16/06/2021 - 05:43
Hi All
So I’ve got this new baby Hana Matoi and was wondering if I could remove the lower two branches safely. I would like to train this to be a tree with a a canopy (no lower legs). I know when bonsai you often will keep a sacrificial lower branch to create a thicker trunk but for what a I want to do I think the tree is wasting energy having it? So question is
1. Could I clip the lower two branches
2. If so when is the safest time
3. Would I leave space for die back say 1-2” from the...

Leaves of paper bark maple becoming brown and spotty

Tue, 15/06/2021 - 21:28
I have several paperbark maples that are just a couple years old, less than 18" tall. I acquired them as dormant bare stock early in the spring and have been growing them outside since. One didn't make it, and the rest have consistently shown this browning. One was transplanted and the others had some watering irregularities so I chocked it up to that, but I want to be sure there isn't anything to be worried about here. These are the most difficult to get of the plants I have and I'm proud...

Palmatum or Shirasawanum

Sun, 13/06/2021 - 19:10
So this assumed to be palmatum was the root stock to a dissectum that died. This is the first year it produced seeds. I thought it was a palmatum because of its leaf shape but the seeds are making me thinking different.

Hybrid?

Could someone help ease my mind.

Acer starfish leaf problem

Sun, 13/06/2021 - 00:13
Hi all, wonder if anyone has an idea of what this could be on my starfish leaves and is there anyway to treat it.
Not sure if it is fungal or bacterial but when rubbed nothing comes off.

Poorly healed graft

Fri, 11/06/2021 - 21:05
I wonder if this poorly healed graft is going to get better. I don't mind keeping this Japanese Maple as long as it's going to stay alive albeit looking unsightly.

Potting mix with U.K available components

Thu, 10/06/2021 - 13:04
I’ve always used a 50/50 mix of John Innes no 3 and composted bark.
The bark breaks down, composts sinks and water retention capacity reduces.
Not a problem with regular root pruning and repotting, but if I can’t get round to doing this as regular as I’d like, I end up with a potting mix which has sunk signifying its pot and water retention capacity much reduced.
Just wondering on what others are using with components I can easily source in the U.K as I’d like to trial a different mix.

Pest, disease or sun scorch?

Thu, 10/06/2021 - 06:05
Hey Everyone

So I recently got a few young JM from a nursery that’s very reputable. However I do have some concerns and am wondering if I’m over reacting ? I am asking because I don’t want to miss something I can get on top of as well my other JM don’t seem to have these appearances but they are more mature. Any input is greatly appreciated. Here are the concerns as follows:

1. Hana Matoi -(top picture) I believe is infested with Cottony maple leaf scale - I have removed the leaves that...

Girdling Roots - Waterfall JM

Thu, 10/06/2021 - 05:11
Hi Everyone
So I purchased this Waterfall JM May 2020 and it was apparently up potted only a few months prior so I didn’t think I should repot and it again that summer however, it obviously grew very quickly and became pot bound. I missed my opportunity to do a proper root prune this past spring so I simply slip potted it a couple weeks ago and am using a grow bag. One thing I’ve notice in the very short time it’s been in the grow bag is the bag keeps cool and this tree is in full sun....

Bramble irradiation

Wed, 09/06/2021 - 13:32
I live next to a small municipal park and I get brambles and black currents coming up under my gravel boards on my fence..I can’t dig them out because the root goes down deep the other side of the fence in the park..where there are large mounds of them up against my fence.. so I can’t get at them on the park side to dig them up..

I had an idea..if I cut the end of the bramble or black current plant off exposing the thick main growing stem..would it work if I put that thick main stem into a...
