Proposed Classifications of Acer

Proposed Classifications of Acer

Many systemic classifications of Acer have been proposed – e.g. Pax (1885 and others), Rehder (1905), Pojárkova (1933), Fang (1939), Momotani (1961, 1962), Ogata (1967), Murray (1970), de Jong (1976) and Delendick (1981) – prior to de Jong’s widely accepted classification in Maples of the World (1994) and subsequent revision (2002).

We present a summary of current systemic classification proposals, beginning with de Jong’s update of his 1994 classification through a summary of Crowley’s classification for the International Dendrology Society.

Note that the Maple Society does not endorse or support any classification or work associated with compiling, summarizing or proposing of such classifications.  Any classification of the genus found on the Maple Society website, or associated with the Maple Society, does not represent to views of the Maple Society, the Species Group, or any of the respective members of these organizations.
